Robert Herman has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences
of India as a Foreign Fellow. Herman, a long-time member of INFORMS and
the recipient of many of the Institute's most prestigious awards including
the von Neumann Theory Prize and the Lanchester Prize, is the L.P. Gilvin
Centennial Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil Engineering at
the University of Texas-Austin.
William R. Fair, chairman of the board of directors and one
of the founders of Fair, Isaac, died on Jan. 19. He was 73. Mr. Fair had
been the president of the company from its incorporation in 1960 until his
retirement in 1991. After that, he continued to serve as chairman and also
acted as a consultant to the company on technical matters.
Fair, Isaac President and CEO Larry Rosenberger said, "All of us associated
with Fair, Isaac -- employees, stockholders and clients -- are deeply indebted
to Bill Fair. The statistically based decision processes and automated processing
technologies which he pioneered, along with his partner, the late Earl Isaac,
have profoundly changed the U.S. consumer credit industry. His legacy of
technical excellence and innovation, perseverance in the face of skepticism,
and absolute integrity is the foundation of Fair, Isaac."
Fair held degrees from the California Institute of Technology, Stanford
University and the University of California at Berkeley. He was a member
of INFORMS, the American Associations for Advancement of Science, Caltech
Associates and the Society of California Pioneers.
P. George Benson, dean of Rutgers' Faculty of Management, has
been appointed dean of the faculty of Management-Newark and the School of
Business-New Brunswick. Before coming to Rutgers, Benson was the director
of the Operations Management Center at the Carlson School of Management
at the University of Minnesota.
Bruce Golden, professor of management science and statistics
at the University of Maryland, and colleagues I. Ming Chao and Edward Wasil
received the 1994 Thomas L. Saaty Prize (awarded in 1995) for their paper,
"A New Heuristic for the Multi-Depot Vehicle Routing Problem that Improves
Upon Best Known Solutions." The Saaty Prize is awarded annually for
applied advances in the mathematical and management sciences, based on the
best papers in the previous year's volume of the American Journal of
Mathematical and Management Sciences.
