Special Issue of Journal of Operations Management

The Journal of Operations Management invites papers for a special issue on theory-driven empirical research. Researchers in operations management are now beginning to recognize the need for more empirically based research that is directed primarily at theory building. With this new orientation, our focus is to build, develop, refine and test theories or frameworks. These theories provide new perspectives on the events and activities taking place in operations management. With this shift in focus comes a need for new research tools and perspectives. This special issue is devoted to gaining a better understanding of the issues, approaches and problems present when undertaking theory-driven empirical research.

Suggested topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Discussion of the traits of effective theory-driven empirical research
Differences between theory building research, problem solving and theory testing research
Definition and exploration of the major terms and constructs found in theory-driven research (e.g., models, frameworks, constructs, theories)
Identification, assessment and application of alternative tools useful in theory-driven empirical research (e.g., qualitative research methodologies, triangulation)

The deadline for submission of papers is Aug. 31, 1996.

Focused Issue of Transportation Science

Optimization-based management systems are proving to be a competitive weapon for many airlines and rail companies participating in today's highly competitive market. Their use has lead to significant improvements in many customer service performance measures. Through this focused issue, Transportation Science seeks to bring together important developments at the forefront of research and implementation in this field.

Transportation Science seeks papers dealing with modeling and algorithmic aspects of airline and rail operational problems, case studies and insightful survey papers. A cursory list of areas of interest includes: aircraft routing, crew pairing, monthly block assignments, aircraft maintenance, air cargo management, intermodal railroad terminal design and operation, locomotive assignment, train scheduling, dispatching and train control systems.

UNESCO Symposium

Papers are sought for UNESCO's International Symposium on Energy and Environmental Management and Technology, which will be held Dec. 5-6, 1996, at the Beckman Center at the National Academies of Science and Engineering in Irvine, Calif. The main theme of the symposium is "Sustainable Synergetic Development: Private/Public/Academia Partnership in Energy and Environmental Management and Technology."

Papers related to all aspects of energy and environmental management and technology are of interest. Workshop on Information Technologies and Systems

The 6th Workshop on Information Technologies and Systems (WITS '96) will be held Dec. 14-15, 1996, in Cleveland, Ohio. The purpose of the workshop is to promote discussion and interaction among members of the Information Systems community with research interests in cutting-edge information technologies and systems. The organizers are particularly interested in exchanging research ideas and results which will not only contribute to the academic areas, but will also benefit the business community in the foreseeable future.

Condensed research papers are sought which describe original ideas and new results on information technologies and their applications. The research should address issues concerning the theory, development, and/or deployment of information technologies and systems. Proposals for panels that examine an emerging, innovative, or otherwise provocative issue are also encouraged. Also, this year's workshop will feature poster sessions in WITS.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to: decision support systems, integrated cognitive architecture, theory of model formulation, executable modeling languages, model base management systems, database systems (modeling, language development, and implementation), natural language front-ends to models, extensible database systems, object-oriented database systems, distributed database systems, Internet issues, computer networks and telecom, knowledge-based systems, applications of distributed AI, collaborative and group systems, human-computer interfaces, software reusability, software process modeling, virtual reality, and software development environment.
