Gaining a Competitive Edge Through People

By Pablo Rodriguez, President and General Manager,
Intel Puerto Rico

In today's world, corporations are breaking down the boundaries in which they formerly operated.Technology also is standardizing business and manufacturing processes, and any company with sufficient monetary resources can purchase the equipment and process specifications to become a player in global manufacturing. But at Intel Puerto Rico, we believe that the differentiator, the key to gaining and sustaining the competitive edge, is our people.

We see our employees as our most valuable resource and believe that the successful management of that resource will allow the organization to unify and compete. This resource needs to be nurtured to create the dedication, trust and loyalty required for success. All employees need to feel that they own a part of the company and that the company's success will mean success for them.

A sense of ownership by employees is especially critical as we approach a new millennium. The technology revolution has spawned the information superhighway, which in turn has expanded and created more sophisticated media outlets. Changing political concepts and boundaries have altered our image of the world and have become blurred in the world of international business. As time passes, differences in production processes and materials used in different parts of the world will decline and, therefore, so will differences between companies.

Intel Puerto Rico believes that a structured and systematic process for human resource development is the backbone of the organization. The processes must be integrated and aligned, both to train and educate the employees to face the technological challenges of the 21st Century as well as to foster the development of character, loyalty and teamwork. Organizations such as APICS, which promote education, contribute significantly to the development of the educated and trained employees that are the key to our success.

At Intel Puerto Rico the focus is not only on the technical training but also on a system of values that serves as a platform for the integration of employees. These values form the core of our Fundamentals Program, where policies and procedures are taught, and our Facilitator Development Program, which develops a management style that fosters employee empowerment.

Teamwork is the name of the game at Intel Puerto Rico. The production lines are organized into self-directed natural work teams that plan the work for the day, meet goals and measure team performance through established indicators. They share their achievements through bulletin boards and weekly meetings with management.

Cross-functional teams are our basic working unit for process improvement and problem solving. The process capitalizes on the collective intelligence of employees from different levels and sectors of the organization and makes the decision process a shared one. The teams foster an environment of trust where "win-win" decisions are made.

The employees' sense of ownership is heightened by our compensation program, which includes stock options, an excellent stock purchase program and generous performance bonuses. These programs are offered to all employees. Employee development and teamwork are fundamental to organizational competitiveness and are the answers to the challenges of the new millennium.
