September 1997 Volume 7 Number 9 APICS Report Chapter Awards Puerto Rico Professor Wins Student Chapter Mentor Award Angel A. Sosa, CFPIM, a professor of management at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR)Bayamon, has won the APICS Student Chapter Mentor Award. The award recognizes the guidance and leadership the APICS student chapters receive from parent chapters, faculty or academic members. A long-time member of APICS and a professor at UPR since 1976, Sosa was responsible for the development and implementation of the curriculum for the bachelor's degree in materials management at UPR in 1989, the first degree offered in Puerto Rico related to this field. Sosa initiated the creation of the APICS Student Chapter at Bayamon in 1993. Just this year, he helped develop two additional APICS student chapters in other universities in Puerto Rico. Sosa will be honored during APICS '97 next month in Washington, D.C. He will receive a commemorative plaque and a $500 line of credit to be used toward continuing APICS education in resource management. Bowling Green State Wins Second Student Voluntary Service Award Monica L. Hassel, a student at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in Ohio, has won the 1997 APICS Student Voluntary Service Award. This is the second year in a row that a BGSU student has won the award. Similar to the long-running Voluntary Service Award, this award recognizes APICS student members for student leadership, chapter achievements and contributions to the parent chapter, region and society. Hassel will receive a commemorative plaque and a $500 line of credit to be used toward continuing APICS education in resource management. Hassel plays an active role in APICS and served this past spring as president of the APICS BGSU Student Chapter. She has been responsible for many campuswide APICS promotional activities including arranging for guest speakers for the student chapter meetings, fundraising and serving as liaison to the parent chapter in Toledo. Certification New CIRM Brochure Now Available The new brochure, "Give Your Career a Broad-Based Competitive Edge" (item #09011), which covers the Certified in Integrated Resource Management (CIRM) program, is now available from APICS. The brochure provides an overview of the five CIRM modules as well as information about the benefits of certification, study materials and registration information. Many well-known companies including IBM, Eastman Kodak and Grant Thornton LLP have used CIRM and achieved great success. "I'd recommend CIRM to anyone responsible for customer service, logistics operations, corporate procurement and materials management even financial managers and consultants," said Michael Cantwell, national director for manufacturing/distribution (ret.), Grant Thornton LLP. The 1998 CIRM Certification Bulletin: CBT Registration Procedures will be available at the APICS International Conference and Exhibition, Oct. 26-29, in Washington, D.C., and through APICS Customer Service. Questions about CIRM exam dates should be directed to APICS Customer Service. 1998 Basics of Supply Chain Management Exam Dates The Basics of Supply Chain Management (Basics) exam will be offered in three two-week periods in 1998 as follows:
Basics is recommended as the first module in the CPIM program. Exams for the other six CPIM modules are offered on demand by computer-based testing as much as six days a week, eight to 10 hours a day. More information about the Basics exam is included in the 1998 CPIM Certification Bulletin: CBT Registration Procedures, which will be available at the APICS International Conference and Exhibition, Oct. 26-29, in Washington, D.C., or through APICS Customer Service. SIGs Final Preparations for Service SIGThe APICS Service (SVC) SIG will be unveiled at APICS '97, Oct. 26-29, in Washington, D.C. Earlier this year, the APICS Board of Directors approved the formation of the SVC SIG, which is geared toward professionals who perform service activities in all industries. The SIG will focus its attention on manufacturing organizations, as well as traditional service industries such as health care, retail, utilities and banking. The first issue of the SVC SIG Newsletter and a brochure about the new SIG will be available at the SIG Booth in the APICS Bookstore at APICS '97. The first SVC SIG product, a collection of articles entitled "Selected Readings in Service," will also be available for sale at the bookstore. Tell Your Theory of Constraints Success StoriesThe Constraints Management (CM) SIG will host the 1998 Constraints Management Symposium and Technical Exhibit, April 16-17, 1998, in Seattle. The CM SIG Steering Committee is inviting potential speakers with constraints management knowledge to respond to its call for ideas by submitting a one-page abstract of a presentation, along with a Call for Ideas application form, to Dave Bowman, senior manager, SIGs (ext. 2267), by Nov. 3, 1997. If selected, presenters will make an oral presentation of their work, and written papers will be published in the symposium proceedings. In addition, presenters receive a complimentary registration for the entire symposium. E&R Foundation E&R Foundation Call for Proposals for Research Project The APICS Educational and Research (E&R) Foundation, in conjunction with the Marketing Sciences Institute, is seeking proposals for a study titled "Managing the Flow of Information in the Business Enterprise." Proposals are due by Nov. 2, 1997. They should explore ways of implementing and managing cross-functional activities emphasizing how marketing and operations interface, how relationships affect production and profits and how information sharing adds to competitive advantages. To qualify for the competition, research teams must be made up of members from diverse business specialties such as operations and marketing.
