APICS '96 Plant Tours Focus on Small Manufacturing and Process Industries

One of the more interesting features of the annual APICS International Conference and Exhibition are tours of different manufacturing facilities, many of which are unique to the geographic location of the conference. This year is no different.

On Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., conference attendees will be able to tour Laitram Corp., a state-of-the-art molding facility that produces a variety of manufacturing products. Laitram is made up of four different companies geared to small manufacturing. The tour focuses on three divisions: Intralox, Machinery and Digicourse. Intralox invented and produces plastic conveyor belts; Machinery produces an industrial shrimp peeler and industrial-grade steam cooker; and Digicourse is an electronics division that produces compasses for deep-water equipment.

The second tour, scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (lunch included), is of an Exxon Corp., U.S.A., petroleum refinery. This tour is geared toward the process industry. Attendees will be exposed to integrated supply chain logistics, transportation issues, byproducts and coproducts. The visit will include a driving tour of the operating facilities.

For more information about the plant tours, call APICS Customer Service at (800) 444-2742 or (703) 237-8344 and ask for the complete APICS '96 Conference Registration Brochure (item #04037).

AMES Booth at Conference Gives Attendees Overview of Manufacturing Education

The Applied Manufacturing Education Series (AMES) is one of APICS' most popular educational products, and APICS '96 attendees can get insight into the curriculum from a visit to the AMES booth located in the APICS Bookstore in the exhibit hall. The booth will be staffed by instructors who use the materials in their classes. They will explain the benefits of the courseware that provides training in areas such as master planning, Just-in-Time, inventory management, production activity control, material requirements planning and capacity requirements planning.

The AMES exhibit will be open during regular bookstore hours. For more information about the AMES Series, call Gene A. Crepeau, CFPIM, CIRM, APICS-AMES master sales agent, at (860) 567-8628 or APICS Customer Service at (800) 444-2742 or (703) 237-8344 and request item #02567.

APICS to Introduce New CPIM Module in Spring 1997

APICS will introduce Basics of Supply Chain Management (Basics), the seventh module in the Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) program next spring. The Basics module will introduce fundamental concepts in materials management in the supply chain, emphasizing basic terminology and relationships among all activities in the supply chain.

The Basics module will serve two purposes:

  • Provide a solid overview of the supply chain

  • Introduce the other six CPIM modules

APICS '96 attendees will be able to get more information about the Basics module by visiting the certification center in the registration area of the convention center. Content experts will be available at designated times to answer questions, and prospective candidates can pick up written information about the module including the 1997 CPIM Certification Bulletin (item #09002) and the 1997 CPIM International Certification Bulletin (item #09006). Candidates who wish to take a CPIM exam in Mexico should request item #09019.

"I think the Basics module will be of great benefit to CPIM candidates as it will provide a foundation in the terminology and concepts and help them see the whole picture before studying the other in-depth modules," said Patricia Kutt, CAE, APICS director of education.

Look for updates about the Basics module in future editions of APICS -- The Performance Advantage.

For more information about the Basics module, call APICS Customer Service at (800) 444-2742 or (703) 237-8344 and ask for the Basics of Supply Chain Management fact sheet (item #09027).
