SME Presents Awards
The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has presented leaders in manufacturing
engineering, management, education, and research with its Honorary Membership,
the Society's highest honor, and its International Honor Awards.
Robert W. Galvin, the Executive Committee chairman of the Board of Directors
at Motorola, Inc., Schaumburg, Ill., received the Honorary Membership for
his business leadership in the world of technology, support of government/industry-sponsored
research, and innovative use of quality manufacturing methods.
This year's International Honor Awards and recipients are:
Joseph A. Siegel Service Award -- Ronald P. Harrelson, CMfgE,
operations manager, Commercial Division, Caterpillar Training Institute,
Peoria, Ill. He received the award for significant and unique contributions
that have advanced the Society's education and training goals. Harrelson
also served four terms as an international director.
SME Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal -- Horst Kunzmann, Dr.
Ing., director and professor at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt
(PTB), Braunshweig, Germany, and head of the Precision Engineering Division
of the PTB, which is the German equivalent of the NIST. Kunzmann developed
laser interferometers as the world's practical standard of length for dimensional
measurement.
SME Gold Medal -- Stephen Malkin, ScD, professor of Mechanical
and Industrial Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst,
Mass. He received this award for internationally recognized research on
machining and grinding processes and for technical contributions enhancing
productivity and part quality.
SME Education Award -- Dan L. Shunk, Ph.D., associate professor
of Industrial Engineering, Arizona State University, Tempe, Ariz. He received
this award for inspiring leadership in manufacturing engineering education
at both the university and industry level. Shunk established a computer-integrated
manufacturing and electronic networking department at the university and
teaches at the Motorola Management Institute.
Donald C. Burnham Manufacturing Management Award -- James J.
Zawacki, president of GR Spring & Stamping, Inc., Grand Rapids, Mich.
He received this award for innovative use of human, technical, and financial
resources to transform his company into a world-class manufacturing competitor.
