Paperless factory

A newly formed strategic alliance allows users of ProfitKey International's Rapid Response Manufacturing a direct connection to JNL Industries' Cimmnet Folders system. The alliance gives users the power to put timely and accurate documentation on the shop floor, leading the way toward a paperless factory. Label printer applicator

Imtec, Inc. has released X2 Turbo version of their ApplyPro bar code label printer applicator. It is used in applications requiring on-demand automated labeling. These applications are typically found in shipping, distribution, packaging, and product labeling. The X2 Turbo is designed specifically for high-speed, tamp apply labeling. Using a 12-inches-per-second printer, the X2 Turbo is able to print and apply labels at speeds up to 85 labels per minute. As a member of the ApplyPro family, the X2 Turbo uses modular construction, making it easy to adapt to varying application requirements. Using "plug and play" components, integration of the unit is simplified.

Material tracking and control

The AXIOM/mx software from AXIS Computer Systems enables mixed-mode manufacturers to collect and analyze information from the shop floor on a timely basis, achieve shortened product cycles, increase product customization, reduce scrap and costs, and boost overall productivity. Labor analysis module

Studebaker Technology has added a labor analysis module to their Tiger Eye Shop Floor Management software. Labor analysis provides daily or weekly performance reporting by employee, work center or department. Labor analysis reporting by work center answers questions of consistent, improving, declining or random efficiencies for specific work centers. This information identifies whether standards for operations in specific work centers are on target or out of line. Employee efficiency can be analyzed across work centers, indicating that employee's proficiency in certain types of work. Job variance analysis identifies a normal production run for a specific job.

Data collection

IBM has announced new object-oriented software and enhanced hardware for its family of data collection devices. With the addition of four new software offerings and new portable hardware models, IBM's family of data collection solutions offers users an improved development interface, expanded hardware and networking support, better speed and performance, and a tiered pricing structure. Included is a new object-oriented data collection development toolkit which simplifies application development and offers an easy-to-use graphical user interface; expanded platform options; four new wireless data collection terminals; Ethernet adapter cards; and expanded peripheral support for the 7526 fixed data collection terminals.

Business process management

The Strategic Application Modeler (SAM) from Ross Systems is a software tool for business process management for use with the Ross Systems Renaissance CS enterprise-class solution. SAM defines and manages business processes and procedures; reduces systems implementation time; and manages the evolution of applications and business processes throughout their life cycle. SAM provides a number of graphical views of an organization. These views help identify who, what, when, where, why and how of a business. Both automated and manual processes and procedures can be modeled and documented. SAM also links cost and time information to the model.
