Conference
Daniel Burrus to Deliver APICS '96 Keynote Address
For one of the few times in APICS conference history, a keynote speaker
from a previous conference is returning for an encore performance. Technology
forecaster and author Daniel Burrus, who enlightened and entertained attendees
at the 1994 APICS International Conference and Exhibition in San Diego,
will deliver a keynote address at APICS '96 in New Orleans on Tuesday, Oct.
15.
Burrus is the founder and president of Burrus Research Associates, Inc.,
a Milwaukee-based research and consulting firm that specializes in global
innovations in science and technology. Burrus has a reputation for accurately
predicting the future of technological change and has helped hundreds of
clients develop successful competitive strategies through the creative applications
of cutting-edge technology. His client list spans a wide range of industries
and includes such companies as AT&T, Motorola, DuPont, Merrill Lynch
and Bell Atlantic.
Burrus has founded and managed five businesses in a variety of fields and
knows how to translate research findings into practical business advantages.
He is the author of Technotrends, as well as five other books and a variety
of technical publications.
Burrus' presentations are as amusing as they are informative, according
to many who attended his keynote address in San Diego. As a speaker, he
blends the comedic timing and delivery of a young George Carlin with motivation
to help audiences understand how to make a rapidly changing business environment
a competitive advantage. How? By getting all members of an organization
involved in creatively utilizing the latest technology.
Burrus joins previously announced keynote speakers Gen. Colin L. Powell,
USA (Ret.), who speaks on Monday, Oct. 14, and business entrepreneur and
former football star Fran Tarkenton, who is scheduled to speak on Wednesday,
Oct. 16.

APICS '96 Educational Sessions Offer a Complete Learning Environment
APICS '96 offers educational sessions focusing on the daily processes and
challenges industry professionals must face. It also explores topics that
compel people to look beyond traditional workplace roles. Participants will
attend sessions such as "Improving Inventory Performance and Bottom-line
Profits," "Competing in a Global Market," and "Applying
Big Business Planning for Small Business Success." By attending special
targeted sessions, conference attendees will learn about other market segments
that affect their daily processes. These sessions address such topics as
"Accounting and the Theory of Constraints," "Environmentally
Responsible Manufacturing," and "How to Improve Communication
Between Purchasing and Manufacturing."
Participants also will have the opportunity to discuss several case studies,
including "Beyond MRP II -- An Optimum Manufacturing System,"
"Activity Based Costing and Continuous Improvement," and "How
Cost Accounting Adapted to a JIT Implementation." Case studies enable
participants to learn how new processes and procedures have worked for other
organizations and decide which new processes are right for their companies.
What's New
APICS Past President to Address Brussels Manufacturing Conference
Selim G. Noujaim, CFPIM, 1995 APICS International President, will be a special
guest speaker at a major European manufacturing conference in Belgium in
June. Titled "Picture the Future: Competing through Agile Manufacturing
and Logistics in Virtual Organizations," the conference is scheduled
for June 13-14. It is being organized by the Production and Inventory Control
Society (PICS) Belgium, an international affiliate of APICS, on behalf of
the Federation of European Production and Industrial Management Societies
(FEPIMS).
"Our goal is to make this conference as interesting as possible to
international cultures and we're hoping to attract manufacturing and service
industry professionals from Europe and America," said Luc G. Chalmet,
Ph.D., 1996 FEPIMS president and president of PICS Belgium. Chalmet, who
will deliver the opening address to the conference, was instrumental in
introducing agile manufacturing concepts in Europe, according to Noujaim.
Noujaim will address the conference on Friday, June 14, on the topic of
"Strategies for Survival in the 21st Century." Other keynote speakers
and educational session presenters include Steven Goldman, co-chair and
COO of the Agility Forum at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania; Christoph
Loch, Ph.D., INSEAD; and John Puttick, principal fellow, manufacturing group,
University of Warwick, United Kingdom.
The conference will be held at the Sodchotel Brussels, near the Brussels
International Airport. For more information or to register, call the FEPIMS

Defense Department Official to Address APICS Aerospace & Defense
Technical Conference
Michael McGrath, Ph.D., assistant director for manufacturing of the Defense
Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), will deliver a keynote address
at the APICS Aerospace & Defense Technical Conference. The conference
will take place on May 22 and 23 in Washington, D.C. McGrath will address
the conference on Wednesday, May 22.
DARPA-sponsored technologies have led to changes inside and outside the
Department of Defense including development of new composites, sponsorship
of the early development of stealth technology and development of the ARPAnet,

E&R Foundation Looking for Input from Retail Supplier Manufacturers
The APICS Educational and Research (E&R) Foundation is looking for information
from manufacturing companies that supply large retail organizations for
a study being conducted in coordination with the Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute (RPI). The study will focus on how manufacturing companies are
being challenged in meeting the needs of customers such as Wal-Mart, Home
Depot, Toys-R-Us and Builders Square. The foundation/RPI researchers are
particularly interested in how technology and new product design and shipping
requirements are affecting the manufacturer producing for mass merchandisers.
The study also is investigating how relationships along the supply chain
are being affected with smaller buyers.
Anyone willing to discuss the challenges to manufacturing resulting from
requirements set by retail buyers should contact Mike Lythgoe, E&R Foundation
director, at (800) 444-2742 or (703) 237-8585, ext. 202.
