Establishing Ties With The Customer

At press time, the new year has just begun, and with it some changes in the editorial staff structure at APICS -- The Performance Advantage. Readers of this column will know that Greg Farley has now moved out of the office on a regular basis to serve as senior editor, and I have assumed the day-to-day duties of editor. As this is my first chance to address the readership, I would like to take this opportunity to express my vision as editor.

My vision is rooted in the simple tenet: If it isn't broke, don't fix it. And our editorial structure has not only proven its soundness, but its ability to exceed expectations. However, even in a successful operation, there is always room for improvement.

This magazine's editorial policy states our goal of providing the reader with timely, insightful and accurate information on the latest integrated resource management principles and practices in order to bolster competitiveness, quality and productivity.

The first portion of that statement, like the policy of any successful endeavor, invokes the customer -- "providing the reader." To ensure that we remain effective in this area, I need feedback.

We here at APICS -- The Performance Advantage already compile a large amount of feedback through a yearly reader survey. However, like a major news organization's survey, only a sampling of the targeted base can be polled. And chances are that you, like myself, have never had any of the major networks call you or anyone you know to gauge your opinions on a pressing subject.

So here's your chance. An open line of communication exists between you, the reader, and the editor of this publication.

Let me know what you think about how we are addressing the topics that concern you the most. And if we're not hitting on a subject of importance to you, or if we're coming at it from an angle which could be better focused, let me know.

I would also like to take this opportunity to put a call out to all APICS members to consider contributing to the magazine. If you have an idea for an article or case history, send us a proposal first. We already receive a number of good submissions every year, but we could always use more. And as space provides, we would give every consideration to running your submissions. After all, who better to address the issues facing resource management professionals than those directly responsible for an organization's operation and output?

I look forward to hearing from you. You can e-mail me your ideas at or mail a proposal to me at the address at the top of the masthead on the right side of this page.
