1997 Atlantic Coast Symposium Set for March

APICS Region 11 will sponsor the 13th annual Atlantic Coast Symposium (ACS) on March 25-27, 1997, in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

The 1997 symposium will include more than 40 educational and technical sessions focusing on manufacturing and service essentials, supply chain management, interpersonal business skills, constraints management and best practices. Evening activities will include a tour of an IBM manufacturing facility.

New this year, ACS will offer a full three-day workshop on the Principles of Materials Management, the foundation of the APICS materials management body of knowledge, instructed by Tony Arnold, CFPIM, CIRM, and Lloyd Clive, CFPIM. This workshop is an excellent opportunity for attendees to get a concentrated education on the basics of scheduling, purchasing and inventory management.

ACS also will sponsor the third annual Team Success Showcase the morning of March 25. The showcase will feature 16 business teams presenting case studies on their projects, challenges, training, problem-solving methodologies, solutions and successes.

ACS is a not-for-profit program sponsored by the 25 APICS chapters in the Carolinas and Virginia. Conference fees are $225 for a single-day registration and $475 for the full conference or to attend the three-day Principles of Materials Management workshop. The fee to enter the Team Showcase is $250. To receive a detailed brochure or more information, please contact Sharon Cave, ACS registration coordinator, at (910) 759-5045 or Jim McCarthy, ACS chairman, at (330) 264-6464, ext. 5917. Interested exhibitors may contact Tim Lyons, exhibits chairman, at (910) 272-1241.

John Vowell, CAE, Joins APICS as Deputy Executive Director

John Vowell, CAE, joined APICS as deputy executive director last month. Vowell has extensive experience in manufacturing and association environments where quality, efficient operations, and development of membership and products have been strategic issues. Vowell will be responsible for directing APICS' operations planning function and assisting the executive director in the execution of administrative tasks. He also will have important revenue responsibilities through his direction of the society's efforts to expand and develop its membership.

Before coming to APICS, Vowell spent eight years with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), where he began as a manager of technical committee operations and served most recently as director of institute standards and research technical committee support. While at ASTM, Vowell developed new non-dues revenue-generating programs, and created and implemented a marketing strategy that doubled the membership response rate and produced an increase of more than 5,000 in the organization's membership as well as a 300 percent increase in his division's net revenues.

A graduate of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., with a B.S. in industrial engineering, Vowell spent several years as a quality assurance engineer for Ingersoll-Rand. He also holds an MBA degree with concentrations in finance and international business from Syracuse University's Crouse-Hinds Graduate School of Management. In addition, Vowell has earned the Certified Association Executive designation from the American Society of Association Executives.

Addition to List of APICS Honorary Members

The October 1996 issue of APICS -- The Performance Advantage included an article about honorary members of APICS. Henry H. Jordan, a member of this select group, recently reminded the Society that the late Oliver Wight, founder of the successful consulting group that bears his name, is an honorary member but was not included in the listing. Thus, APICS is re-running a complete listing of the 12 honorary members of APICS.

APICS to Cosponsor Technology Center at National Manufacturing Week

APICS recently agreed to cosponsor the Manufacturing Enterprise IT Solutions Center, which will be featured during National Manufacturing Week, March 10-13, at McCormick Place South in Chicago.

The IT Solutions Center will be a prominent exhibit of the National Industrial Automation, Integration and Control Show -- one of five industry events that make up National Manufacturing Week. It will feature enterprisewide solutions designed to empower teams, improve communication, integrate systems and increase productivity. The APICS booth will be a prominent part of the center, set up as a small theater that will display materials and feature live presentations focusing on integrated resource management.

"It makes perfect sense for APICS to be a cosponsor of the IT Solutions Center, because of the society's prominence as the leader on the education side of integrated resource management," said Jeffry Raynes, CAE, APICS executive director and chief operating officer. "That leadership is embodied by the Certified in Integrated Resource Management (CIRM) program. Therefore, APICS' involvement is the perfect complement to the technology aspects of the Center," he added.

APICS also will sponsor four educational sessions during National Manufacturing Week focusing on four of the five CIRM modules, and will manage a 6,000-square-foot bookstore for the show that draws more than 65,000 people.

For more information about National Manufacturing Week, call APICS Customer Service at (800) 444-2742 or (703) 237-8344 and request the National Manufacturing Week Brochure, item #04027.
