CIRM Module Revisions Take Effect in 1998

On Jan. 1, 1998, revisions to three of the five modules of the Certified in Integrated Resource Management (CIRM) program will take effect. The revisions follow up the change to the Support Functions module which was expanded and renamed Enterprise Concepts and Fundamentals earlier this year. The Integrated Enterprise Management module, the fifth and final module in the CIRM process, will continue to focus on the six perspectives of the enterprise.

The revisions to the three modules are as follows:

  • Identifying and Creating Demand (formerly Customers and Products) This module examines the business processes that define your marketplace and sell the products your company has available or is willing to develop. These business processes include strategies that identify, define and quantify customer wants and needs and result in mutually profitable sales. It also addresses how to identify and close on customer demand so the rest of your enterprise's resources can be used effectively to deliver value-added products and services.
  • Designing Products and Processes (formerly Manufacturing Processes) This module examines the systems, approaches and strategies used by an enterprise to convert a need or innovation into a product, process or service that meets both the customer's and the enterprise's expectations. Study the activities in the design process, including organizing and defining the design team, determining resources needed, identifying work to be done, anticipating output, doing the work and measuring the results. See how a design strategy draws on the organization's strengths and competencies to provide value to the customer and sustain competitive position.
  • Delivering Products and Services (formerly Logistics) This module expands on the concept of the value-driven enterprise, which was introduced in Enterprise Concepts and Fundamentals. The goal of Delivering Products and Services is to examine the systems, approaches, and strategies used by the enterprise to make the transition between concept to product and between customer expectation and product delivery.

Additional details about the CIRM program revisions will appear in an upcoming issue of APICS—The Performance Advantage. For more information about the CIRM program, call APICS Customer Service and request the CIRM Fact Sheet (item #09030). Information about workshops covering CIRM topics is available in the 1998 APICS Programs Calendar (item #04076).

Online Ordering System Gets Off to a Fast Start

Editor's note: The APICS online ordering system was implemented in late September (see Ken Moser's column). This new service allows customers to order educational materials from APICS directly from the society's World Wide Web site — http://www.apics.org. Within 50 minutes of activating the online ordering system, APICS received the first online order from Alan Swann of R.J. Thompson Data Systems, Inc., in Ontario, Canada. Swann received a $25 gift certificate for being first "in line for online" ordering. He also wrote a letter complimenting APICS on the new system, giving APICS permission to reprint it.

Dear APICS:
Thank you very much for the $25 gift certificate. I had no idea that your online catalog and ordering system was brand new! On Friday a colleague had recommended that I purchase the Activity Based Costing book by Gary Cokins. I was fairly sure that I had seen it in the APICS literature but I couldn't find my catalog. I logged on to www.apics.org and there on the first page was the "Catalog." Using your convenient search engine, I was able to quickly locate the book. When I saw your picture of the book cover I knew it was the book I had seen! After adding it to my shopping cart, I was able to quickly "check out" and charge the purchase to my credit card using your "secure document" feature. Wonderfully convenient!

Sincerely,
Alan Swann

Cox is 1997 APICS Voluntary Service Award Winner

James F. Cox III, Ph.D., CFPIM, was awarded the highest annual recognition for volunteers, the APICS 1997 Voluntary Service Award. An APICS member for nearly two decades, Cox has been a driving force behind spreading the APICS body of knowledge on the collegiate level, and has played an integral role in the APICS Educational and Research (E&R) Foundation. He has also served as editor of the APICS Dictionary.

Cox received the award at the chapter awards celebration during APICS '97, held Oct. 26-29 in Washington, D.C., where he was recognized for his dedicated service to APICS on both the region and chapter level.

A professor at the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business, Cox has served as an APICS regional vice president, vice president of education development and two-term president of the E&R Foundation. Last year, Cox developed and taught a series of constraints management workshops in Georgia that were big revenue-boosters to the local chapter and the foundation. In addition, Cox has been instrumental in working with the state of Georgia to promote an awareness of the impact of manufacturing on the U.S. economy, and of APICS involvement in the manufacturing world, through a successful sponsorship of Georgia Manufacturing Appreciation Week.

"To honor Jim Cox is to pay tribute to a volunteer who has labored unselfishly for APICS and for educational and research issues in particular," said Michael Lythgoe, foundation director. "His voluntary service reflects great credit on APICS and on himself."

Survey Profiles APICS Magazine Readers

According to a recent survey of APICS—The Performance Advantage readers, most work for large manufacturing firms and earn $61,000 annually.

For the fourth year in a row, the survey was conducted by Readex Inc., of St. Paul, Minn.

The mail survey results are based on 409 responses. Specifically:

  • Seventy-nine percent of respondents described their organizations' operations as manufacturing.
  • The average number of people employed in a respondent's organization, both full and part time at all locations, is 4,660, and the organization's average revenue is $67 million.
  • Thirty-one percent of respondents have received professional certification from one or more organizations, 25 percent from APICS.
  • Eighty-seven percent of the survey respondents gave the magazine an excellent or good rating, up three percent from the survey conducted in 1996.

The survey found that 46 percent of the respondents have input into the purchase of computer hardware, with an average expenditure of $179,000, and 52 percent have input into the purchase of computer software, spending an average of $143,000. Meanwhile, 20 percent of those involved in purchasing reported that their purchasing decisions have been assisted by advertisements in the magazine, the annual "APICS Buyers Guide" and other buyer/purchasing guides.
