Editor's Note: Last month the APICS Report featured information about Basics of Supply Chain Management, the seventh module in the Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) program, which will be introduced in spring 1997. The following article provides details about the new module. In 1997, APICS is introducing a seventh module to the Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) program. The APICS CPIM program is designed to develop specialized knowledge in the latest production and inventory management techniques and trends. The Basics of Supply Chain Management (Basics) module introduces fundamental concepts in managing the complete flow of materials in the supply chain. Information in this module emphasizes basic terminology and relationships among activities in the supply chain.
The Basics module serves two purposes: It is a solid overview of the supply chain and an introduction to the other six CPIM modules. Consequently, knowledge of the information in this module is assumed as a prerequisite for the six existing CPIM modules. The other modules cover similar topics, but in much greater depth.
The new module is divided into four major areas: (1) understanding businesswide concepts for satisfying customer expectations; (2) determining and managing customer demand; (3) managing the transformation processes used to satisfy customer demand; and (4) managing the supply activity supporting transformation processes.

Candidates should also request a copy of the 1997 CPIM Certification Bulletin (item #09002N) for up-to-date information on exam registration procedures in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
The testing schedule for sites outside the United States and Canada varies. Contact APICS Customer Service at (800) 444-2742 or (703) 237-8344 to request the 1997 CPIM International Certification Bulletin (item #09006) which will be available in October 1996.
Candidates who preregister by Jan. 15, 1997, for the first testing window of the Basics exam (March 1-8, 1997) are eligible for a 20 percent discount on the registration fee:

The score reports for the first offering of the Basics exam will be mailed six to eight weeks after the exam dates. Candidates interested in preregistering and receiving 20 percent off the registration fee should call APICS Customer Service and request a Basics preregistration form (item #09029). You can also fax your request or mail it to APICS, ATTN: Data Resources, 500 West Annandale Road, Falls Church, VA 22046-4274. Candidates will be sent a special preregistration form to be completed and returned with payment to APICS Headquarters by Jan. 15, 1997.
At its August meeting, the APICS Board of Directors voted to broaden the focus of the Aerospace and Defense (A&D) SIG to include those industries that, like A&D, operate in highly complex project manufacturing areas. The same tools and body of knowledge developed by the A&D SIG will be incorporated into the new Complex Industries (CI) SIG and disseminated to an expanded audience.
Among those complex industries expected to benefit from membership in the new SIG are manufacturers of complex electronics, medical products and telecommunications equipment.
"The broadening of the SIG's focus will bring the A&D body of knowledge and core competencies to other similar industries while fostering the use of the best commercial practices across the SIG's member companies," said Frank Colantuono, CPIM, C.P.M., CI SIG chair.
Because the CI SIG encompasses the A&D body of knowledge, the APICS A&D SIG will be absorbed into the CI SIG. A&D SIG membership will automatically be converted into CI SIG membership.
More information about the new CI SIG will be available at APICS '96, Oct. 13-16, in New Orleans, at the SIG booth located in the APICS Bookstore. Attendees also can get information about all seven APICS SIGs and SIG educational opportunities and materials.
The CI SIG also will host a "Birds-of-a-Feather" informational session at the conference on Monday, Oct. 14, at 1:15 p.m., in Room 19 of the convention center.

The A&D Technical Conference will take place on Nov. 6-7, in Santa Monica, Calif. The conference will explore supply chain management&emdash;a process used by A&D and other complex industries manufacturers. Participants will learn new techniques for managing the flow of materials through an organization, from acquisition to final distribution to the customer.

Albert V. Santora, an APICS member since the society's incorporation in 1957, was granted an honorary membership in recognition of his contributions to the society and to the field of resource management.
A resident of South Florida for the past 20 years, Santora previously lived in Connecticut, where he participated in the founding of at least six APICS chapters in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the publication of the first APICS chapter newsletter and the first APICS public education seminar. He served in various capacities as a member of the APICS Board of Directors, including executive vice president and was chairman of the 1959 APICS International Conference and Exhibition.
Santora will receive his honorary membership award in a ceremony to be held at APICS '96, the international conference and exhibition, Oct. 13-16, in New Orleans. Santora is one of only 11 people to receive this award. The others are:
Lt. Cmdr. Claire Bloom, MSSI, (USN) was recently appointed the first female executive officer of the USS Constitution, the Navy's oldest commissioned vessel. Better known as "Old Ironsides," the Constitution was commissioned in 1797 and received its popular nickname as a result of its distinguished record and durability during the War of 1812.
Bloom is a long-time APICS member and a frequent APICS presenter at the APICS International Conference and TEAM meetings. In fact, she will be co-presenting a session at APICS '96 titled, "Winning at the Game of Integrated Resource Management."
The Constitution has been anchored in Boston Harbor since 1883,
but Bloom has been busy taking sail training. Why? Because in the
summer of 1997&emdash;the ship's 200th birthday&emdash;it will leave
its moorings for a cruise in the harbor under its own sail for the
first time in 113 years.
David M. Lehmann, Ph.D., CIRM, a long-time APICS volunteer, introduced Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole and California Gov. Pete Wilson at a campaign stop on the factory floor of Solar Turbines Inc., a division of Caterpillar, in San Diego. Dole's appearance took place during the Republican National Convention held in August in that city.
Lehman is the vice president and general manager of manufacturing
for Solar Turbines. He has been a frequent presenter at APICS
international conferences and has served APICS as a member of various
committees.
APICS headquarters has been notified of the deaths of two former APICS region vice presidents: Philip E. Busby, Region 8 and Edward B. Wyatt, Region 12. These deaths came to APICS' attention from Jack Ging, past international president.
In addition, Paul Sheehan, CPIM, past international president, notified APICS of the death of Ken Przybyla, CPIM, former Region 1 vice president who also served as vice president of membership and chapter development.
Through the APICS Educational and Research (E&R) Foundation, the society is working with Virginia-based Gifts In Kind International to provide assistance to APICS members and member companies wishing to dispose of excess inventory through what is known as "product philanthropy." Product philanthropy enables companies to donate inventories ranging from computers to clothing to needy organizations.
Gifts In Kind International, a nonprofit, 501(c) (3) organization, assists many Global 500 companies in developing and managing their product-giving programs; simplifying the process and facilitating the paperwork to ensure compliance with tax laws. The E&R Foundation also is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit and is eligible to receive tax deductible gifts that would be of value to the Foundation, including laptop computers, and software.

APICS recently signed an agreement to sponsor the Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing, one of the foremost awards recognizing manufacturing excellence in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Established in 1988 and administered by Utah State University in Logan, Utah, the Shingo Prize promotes world-class manufacturing and recognizes companies that excel in productivity and process improvement, quality enhancement and customer satisfaction.
Commenting on APICS' sponsorship of the Shingo prize, Jeffry W. Raynes, CAE, APICS executive director and chief operating officer, explained that it is intended to build awareness within the manufacturing community of world-class competitive practices; to communicate and share those practices; and to encourage research and study that will ensure continuous improvement in the academic and business arenas. These aims have always been a part of APICS' mission to the global manufacturing community.
The award is named after the late Shigeo Shingo, who served as president of Japan's Institute of Management Improvement. Shingo and Taiichi Ohno, a former vice president of Toyota Motor Corp., are known as the inventors of Just-in-Time manufacturing processes and other methods that Toyota used to become a world leader in quality.
"Shigeo Shingo was a brilliant and practical man who demonstrated that dedication to overall excellence was best achieved through continual pursuit of simplicity," Raynes said. "APICS is honored to be one of the sponsors of an award that recognizes and perpetuates his contributions to the manufacturing profession."

Is it possible to contact APICS customer service by e-mail? In other words, can I use e-mail to contact customer service for routine inquiries or to order publications, or must I still use the telephone?
APICS: All messages sent via the "Send us mail" function will be handled just like any other communication. Messages are forwarded promptly as appropriate.
While it is our hope to have most of our brochures online in
Acrobat format early next year, you may use e-mail to request
information and literature at will. So long as APICS understands your
request and has a postal (as in snail mail) address, either on file
or in your message, we will get the information to you as quickly as
possible.
Will we be able to order online from the bookstore?
APICS: The catalog is scheduled to come online in the next
few months. At that time, you will be able to review educational
materials online and print them. Sometime next year, APICS hopes to
have a credit card order form online. All domestic (United States,
Mexico and Canada) customers will be able to place an order with us.
Because of problems with taxes, tariffs, shipping and customs,
international members will continue to place orders via their
international associate members instead.
Who do we have to contact so that users may link from APICS.ORG to ours?
APICS: If you check under the "Links to Other Manufacturing
Sites" button on the bottom of the APICS home page, you will find a
link policy and application form. Complete the form and e-mail it to
the APICS WebMaster (see "Send us mail").
I'd like to provide a link to the national page as well as a link to information about the APICS International Conference. What's the URL?
APICS: You should be able to link to the APICS home page
via the domain name,
http://www.apics.org. This should
translate to http://www.industry.net/apics. The conference page is
http://www.industry.net/c/orgunpro/apics/96confex,
but the URL for this page will probably change after October 12.
Since several people have expressed an interest in it, APICS will try
to settle on a standard name then.
Enjoyed Ken Moser's column. I'm a novice on the Internet. The column mentioned several virus scanner programs. Do you know of any Web sites where they can be downloaded?
APICS: You can find two favorites by searching
www.shareware.com for files named "F-PROT" and "VIRUSCAN." If you use
Microsoft Office, you will also want to go to www.msn.com or
www.microsoft.com and download the Word macro virus scanner. Access
the search function and search the Microsoft Word library for
"prank."
I requested a job referral application three weeks ago. Where the %$@*^!!! is it?
APICS: OK, nobody likes to broadcast mistakes, but this one
has some good instructional value. To wit: E-mail is fairly reliable,
but stuff occasionally does happen. This is why we try to send an
acknowledgment for each message. We cannot guarantee that APICS will
be able to do this forever; but for the present, if you don't receive
an acknowledgment within two business days, you may want to send your
message again.
Glad to see the Web pages begin to make their appearance. This is
far and away a better presence than the on-line kit which was more
hassle than value. I hope that this free site has the effect of
stimulating interest in membership. I, of course, have bookmarked
this site.
