APICS '96 Offers Education Geared to Specialty Areas


In addition to education in all areas of resource management, the 1996 APICS International Conference and Exhibition, set for Oct. 13-16 in New Orleans, offers educational sessions in three specialty areas: finance/accounting management, purchasing/supply chain management and quality management. There are more than 70 targeted sessions in these areas, including:

Many of these sessions are among the nearly 130 educational offerings relevant to the challenges faced by small businesses that must maximize their capabilities on tight budgets.

Meanwhile, the Institute of Certified Management Accountants (ICMA) will offer continuing education (CE) credits to Certified Management Accountants attending the conference, with each 50 minutes of session time discussing economics, finance, management or production equaling one CE hour; the National Association of Purchasing Management (NAPM) will offer Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) and Accredited Purchasing Practitioner (A.P.P.) CE hours for purchasing professionals attending the conference; and the American Society for Quality Control (ASQC) will offer recertification credits to ASQC Certified Quality Engineers, Reliability Engineers and Quality Auditors for these professionals' attendance at the conference providing the sessions attended are covered under one area of the body of knowledge in which quality professionals are seeking recertification or job enhancement.


Eli Goldratt Pulls Double Duty at APICS '96

In addition to his involvement with the encore performance of UnCommon Sense&emdash;The Play (Monday, Oct. 14, 8-10 p.m.), which he adapted from his book It's Not Luck, Eliyahu M. Goldratt, Ph.D., will lead an educational session titled "I Want Results," Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Goldratt will instruct attendees on how mid-level production or inventory control managers can change the way a company does business. Attendees will learn how to identify the difference between production and policy constraints and respond accordingly. Goldratt will focus on how the application of the theory of constraints can result in a marked improvement in bottom-line profits.

Conference Membership Booth Offers Tour of APICS Web Site

The membership booth at APICS '96, located in the APICS Bookstore, will include a computer where attendees will be able to take a look at the APICS site on the World Wide Web.

Conference attendees also can find general information about APICS membership at this booth and information about the APICS Employment Referral Program. As reported in the July issue of APICS&emdash;The Performance Advantage, companies that have listed jobs in the past with the APICS Employment Referral Program have the opportunity to list an additional position at no charge at the conference. Listing companies do not have to be present at the conference to post a new job. The booth will have a bulletin board for job listings where the expected 3,000-plus attendees can review the openings. In addition, companies exhibiting at the conference also may post job opportunities at no cost.

1997 Educational Materials Catalog Available at Conference

As mentioned in last month's issue of APICS&emdash;The Performance Advantage, the 1997 APICS Educational Materials Catalog will be available in the APICS Bookstore at APICS '96 in New Orleans. Provided to all conference attendees, this free catalog offers more than 550 resources for career development including books, certification materials, videos and manufacturing training aids. The catalog includes a special section on many of the new specialty items just acquired for APICS members and nonmembers and a new selection of videos including excel-tech's series on data collection and the Wharton Media Video Series. The catalog will be mailed to all APICS members in late October. Learning Opportunities Schedule Also Available at the Conference Bookstore

A learning opportunities schedule, which highlights each educational opportunity offered by APICS in 1997, also will be available in the APICS Bookstore at the '96 conference. This 12-page preview provides a schedule of all APICS workshops, symposia and conferences during the year. It also includes a summary of other APICS educational programming, publications, certification programs and materials and membership benefits and services.

The 1997 APICS Learning Opportunities, a detailed 60-page brochure featuring complete educational and speaker descriptions as well as registration information will be available in late 1996. 1996 Conference Proceedings Available

APICS members who miss the learning opportunities at this year's conference can still obtain a free copy of the APICS 39th International Conference Proceedings. To receive a complimentary copy, members should call APICS Customer Service at (800) 444- 2742 or (703) 237-8344. An APICS membership number is required and membership must have been active at the time of the conference to qualify for the complimentary proceedings. Orders should be placed by Nov. 29.


1996 APICS Conference Features Record Number of Exhibitors

The 1996 APICS International Conference and Exhibition will feature the largest number of exhibitors in conference history. At least 185 exhibitors will be on hand, surpassing the previous record of 168 set in Orlando, Fla., in 1995.

Volunteer Leadership Workshop to be Held at Conference

The Volunteer Leadership Workshop (VLW), set for Saturday, Oct. 12, from 2 to 7:30 p.m., at the Radisson Inn Airport Hotel, New Orleans, is one of the best opportunities for APICS members to take advantage of learning opportunities leading to successful chapter management. This year's presenters will offer diverse perspectives on the many techniques that can ensure a successful chapter program.

The VLW will be followed by the annual APICS Awards Celebration from 7:30-midnight, showcasing the people, chapters and achievements that make APICS a success.

Complimentary tickets for this event will be available at the APICS Membership Booth located in the APICS Bookstore on the exhibit floor.

Anyone interested in presenting an educational session at the 1997 APICS International Conference and Exhibition, set for Oct. 26-29, 1997, in Washington D.C., should note that the deadline for submitting abstracts is Dec. 9.
