January 1998 Volume 8 Number 1 Ringing in the New Just as computer capacity doubles every 18 months, the rapid advance of applied technology in industry seems to nearly outstrip our capacity to stay current. Such is life at the close of the 20th Century. In keeping with this worldwide fervor for the newest and best, APICSThe Performance Advantage brings in the new year with new ideas and points of view to help spur you and your business into a profitable position in our ever-changing global marketplace. The first of these new additions is the column, "Leveraging Logistics." Supplied by Todd Carter, vice president of business development at GATX Logistics, this column will cover the increasing importance of logistics in completing a successful supply chain operation. Although logistics has always been an important piece of the supply chain puzzle, not until recently has it been viewed as such by a number of companies. This unfocused, "just get it here/there" mentality has led to more weaknesses in these crucial links of the supply chain than most logistics professionals would care to recount. So, in the spirit of recognizing and utilizing logistics to make your company's operations most efficient, Carter begins his bimonthly installment of columns with the topic, "Why Logistics Needs to Be Integrated." More supply chain advice can be found in our newly revamped "Supply Chain Management" column. With CNA Consulting & Engineering providing a number of authors for this monthly column, a wide ranging yet unified approach to supply chain optimization will be presented. This month's column starts at the genesis of supply chain management and examines how the traditional processes are evolving into a new model for the new millennium. After examining and explaining this developing process, the authors will demonstrate the successful application of these processes via real world case histories a great way to see how these ideas can be put to use in your own operation. Along with the rapid development and application of new ideas and technologies, many people feel as if they're running from project to project with no clear goal in sight. To provide focus and direction for all employees, documentation can play a vital role in steering a company through the often treacherous waters of change. Trysh Brown, a technical and business writing consultant, explains in her bimonthly column, "Policies and Procedures," why technical documentation of a company's policies and procedures is a key element to success for a well-run company. In addition to providing details about the use and implementation of documentation in aiding day-to-day company procedures, Brown will also examine how documentation can be put to use in leading a company through bigger projects, such as ISO certification. Rounding out our new additions is "Lessons Learned," a column aimed at offering a humorous look at business and life lessons gleaned from experience in the school of hard knocks. Randall Schaefer, CPIM, Spartan Motors, and APICSThe Performance Advantage Editorial Board member will manage this monthly column by initially supplying the first few installments. However and here's the good part we want your input! This call is open to all APICS members. If you have a humorous anecdote containing a valuable lesson from which we could all benefit, please send it to my attention More information about submitting an article can be found in the sidebar to the column. So send in your anecdotes and help us make the magazine a more reader-participatory publication. David Greenfield, editor Correction |
