APICS - 40 Years of Educational Excellence
1997 Marks APICS' 40th Anniversary

In 1957 Dwight Eisenhower, 34th president of the United States, was inaugurated for his second term; the Soviet Union launched the first satellite, "Sputnik," into orbit, marking the starting point of the space race; Ted Williams won another American League batting title at the age of 38; and the Milwaukee Braves were baseball's world champions.

In Cleveland that January, a man named Nyles Reinfeld, president of an education and consulting firm, realized that workers in the production and inventory field were not being recognized by top management as "professionals." In February he held a seminar at his company headquarters and, along with a number of other like-minded people, came up with the idea to form a professional society dedicated to educating production and inventory professionals. Reinfeld later mailed 35 letters to seminar attendees and received 20 responses from people who wanted to help.

These men gathered together at Cleveland's Alcazar Hotel on March 9, 1957, selected Reinfeld as temporary chairperson and Bertrand L. Hansen as temporary secretary, and went about the business of writing a constitution, selecting a name and setting up the structure of the organization. This "continental congress" of manufacturing professionals was the beginning of APICS, officially established on Oct. 5 of that year.

In the months to come, APICS -- The Performance Advantage will offer its readers glimpses of events in APICS' history and share the thoughts of many of the society's "founding fathers."

Meanwhile, APICS would like to hear from anyone who has any details, stories, anecdotes, etc., about the important events in the society's history for possible inclusion in the magazine, space permitting.

Please send the information to APICS, 500 W. Annandale Road, Falls Church, VA 22046-4274, to the attention of Barbara Gleason or Mitchell Singer.
