Orion Consulting Inc., an information technology consulting firm, has expanded its current service offerings in the area of supply chain management consulting with the establishment of its new Supply Chain Solutions business unit.
The company has hired Thomas J. Brown as director of the Supply Chain Solutions. Most recently the director of sales for a leading supply chain management software provider, Brownís responsibilities at Orion will include establishing and managing the companyís new Supply Chain Solutions business unit, initiating new business and growing the unitís staff.

Robert Brandel was recently announced as the Chief Operating Officer for DataWorks Corporation. Previously vice president and general manager of DataWorksí DCD Division, Brandel will now manage operations for the entire corporation.
Brandel was president of DCD for four years prior to the DataWorksí acquisition of the company in September 1996. He was instrumental in creating and implementing new product policies, marketing strategies and distribution programs that were key to the DCDís growth, overall operating performance and profitability.
DataWorks is a supplier of software solutions for discrete and repetitive manufacturers in the mid-range markets. The companyís products feature ERP system functionality combined with open system technologies, including client/server architecture, relational database and Windows-based graphical user interfaces.

Foresight Software, Inc., a provider of client/server customer interaction software, announced the formation of Foresight-Axias, a joint venture with Axias B.V. that is focused on expanding the companyís presence in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Foresight Axias will market, distribute, and support the Foresight Software Service Management System and MXP product lines in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The new center will also offer a multi-lingual help desk, training facilities and regional implementation support.

J.D. Edwards, a developer of business solution software, recently announced the expansion of its Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution to address the specific needs of the fabricated metal, automotive supply, electronics, consumer package goods, pharmaceutical, chemical and energy industry segments.
The company will open Industry Focus Centers for each of these industry segments in order to work more closely with industry manufacturers while continuing to develop functional and technical solutions to meet business practices.
According to industry analysts, fabricated metal, automotive supply, electronics, consumer packaged goods, pharmaceutical, chemical and energy markets accounted for approximately 70 percent of total ERP sales in 1996. This statistic is consistent with J.D. Edwards 1996 ERP sales.

SonicAir, an integrated third-party logistics provider under the UPS Logistics Group, recently announced Distribution Requirements Planning (DRP) -- a new customized inventory distribution service.
Utilizing DRP, a team of SonicAir inventory consultants works with a company to evaluate and re-engineer its distribution system to manage a companyís inventory at optimal levels.
The objectives are to improve fill rate, reduce field inventory, reduce the number of broken calls and increase the number of calls per field engineer.
Using three models, DRP determines the optimal levels of inventory needed to meet customer demand. In doing so, it significantly reduces inventory levels while improving part availability.

Metasys Inc., a provider of transportation management software, recently announced it will provide its Enterprise Transportation Management (ETM) application suite to Intelligent Electronics in a contract valued at $1.8 million.
At Intelligent Electronics, Metasys will use interfaces it has developed to integrate its ETM solution with SAP ERP applications.
The Metasys ETM software manages the complete transportation life cycle which begins with shipment planning -- including automated carrier selection and load optimization -- continues through shipment execution and in-transit tracking and concludes with post-shipment processes.
