MATADOR Feature Takes the "Bull" Out of CyberChat

7/01/97
4:37 PM

WebGenesis -- producers of The Globe, an electronic community -- has developed MATADOR, a new software that takes the "bull" out of Internet chat and allows users to block out profanity in cyberspace.

The MATADOR technology automatically scans the dialogue and filters out potentially offensive text from the public interface of a chat room. Allowing users to control their online experience, they may elect to disable MATADOR, giving them the flexibility to view the text as it was originally written.

Members who post offensive material are issued a brief warning and a reminder of the chat room's guidelines. An advanced feature also allows individuals to completely block messages from specific users.

World Wide Web Worries: New Survey Shows Privacy and E-mail Concerns

6/20/97
11:05

Users of the World Wide Web support government efforts aimed at protecting the privacy of confidential information, but believe the problem of unsolicited electronic mail - known as "spam" - can be solved by voluntary efforts similar to those used by traditional marketers.

These conclusions result from the analysis of comments made by more than 19,970 Web users responding to an on-line survey conducted in April and May by researchers in the Graphics, Visualization and Usability (GVU) Center at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

While few respondents said they like to receive unsolicited e-mail, the survey found little support for laws against it. The solution favored by 38 percent of the respondents was the creation of an "opt-out" list of persons who do not want to receive the mailings. This would be similar to the process now used by telephone and direct mail marketers to avoid contacting persons who have indicated they do not wish to receive solicitations.
