Speech Recognition Capabilities
Digital Equipment's StrongARM SA-1100 chip promises to boost
the capabilities of consumer electronic devices such as
handheld PCs, subnotebooks, wallet PCs, smart cellular
phones and Internet-enabled Web phones. This article
provides a "first look" at this new chip and the improved
speech and handwriting recognition interface capabilities it
could deliver.
TCATS Helps Florida Cops Write More

Unisys has been awarded a contract to develop the Traffic
Citation Accounting and Transmission System for the state of
Florida. TCATS will be designed to process faster and more
efficiently the 3 million traffic citations Florida's police
force dispenses annually.

System
Honda R&D is developing a number of intelligent systems
as a push toward its goal of an Automated Highway System.
These systems include adaptive cruise control, radar brakes,
cornering speed control, lane keeping, and a collision
avoidance system.
USPS Goes High-Tech with Distribution
System
The U.S. Post Office is using the Voice Activated Manual
Secondary Case Distribution System, developed by Verbex,
which allows operators to accomplish a manual sorting of the
mail simply by speaking the street address.

Greetings' Day
Greeting card manufacturer American Greetings is using an
expert system to automate the design and production of
20,000 new cards each year.

Engineers Create "Virtual" Chernobyl for
Disassembly Planning and Clean-Up
Power plant engineers are using virtual manufacturing
software to plan the process of cleaning up the contaminated
Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the former Soviet Union.
VR is Out of This World
As part of the Mars Pathfinder mission, NASA is using
simulation application software to create an interactive,
photorealistic environment on Mars. The Sojourner microrover
sends back stereoscopic images to Earth, where a virtual
reality application allows NASA scientists to interactively
explore the Martian terrain in real time.
