Real-time news on the desktop

Verity Inc. (Mountain View, Calif.), vendor of the Topic family of search and retrieval applications, has teamed up with WavePhore Inc. (Tempe, Ariz.), an operator of worldwide data broadcasting networks. The companies will provide a real-time news component as part of the suite of products being developed by Verity for Microsoft Exchange Server (see cover story).

TopicNewscast for Microsoft Exchange Server will couple real-time delivery of news and information with Microsoft Exchange's client functionality. WavePhore will utilize small-dish satellite and FM subcarrier technology to deliver information sources to the desktop. Microsoft Exchange users can then view up-to-the-minute news and information directly from the desktop client software.

News is received via a WavePhore Intelligent Data Receiver (IDR) and, using TopicNewscast, the stories are deposited into a SQL server database and indexed in Verity format. The indexed information can then be searched and viewed through the Exchange client using TopicSearch, one of the four products that comprise Verity's initial applications for Microsoft Exchange. WavePhore's clients include Dow Jones & Co., Reuters, Associate Press, Knight-Ridder and Thomson Financial Services, among others. The WavePhore Newscast home page is located at http://www.wavephore.com.
