Moving Worlds emerges as new VR standard

Moving Worlds -- an open, platform-independent specification for dynamic 3-D environments on the Internet -- has garnered the support of more than 50 providers of Internet-based services and products for its implementation as the next-generation virtual reality markup langauge (VRML).

Guardsmen train on virtual tanks

A virtual reality training system, designed by the Research Triangle Institute, is being used to maintain the National Guard and Reserves' proficiency in the use of technical manuals and simplifed test equipment in diagnosing problems.


Neural nets clean up utility plants

Ohio Edison puts NeuSight -- an online, real-time, neural-network-based closed loop supervisory control system -- to use in optimizing the combustion process in a coal-fired utility boiler in order to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions and loss on ignition.


Kasparov defeats Deep Blue

Although world chess champion Garry Kasparov defeated the IBM computer known as Deep Blue three times, he lost the first round to the computer -- the first time an artificial intelligence-based system has been able to defeat Kasparov.


HP uses agents to reduce paperwork

Hewlett-Packard's US Field Service Operations Group has developed a paperless wage review system using intelligent agents to deal with quarterly reviews of its 11,000 employees.
