Automatic Generation of Neural Network Architecture Using Evolutionary Computation, by E. Vonk, L.C. Jain and R.P. Johnson, World Scientific Publishing, 200 pages, $38, ISBN 981-02-3106-7

This book describes the application of evolutionary computation in the automatic generation of a neural network architecture. The architecture has a significant influence on the performance of the neural network. It is the usual practice to use trial-and-error to find a suitable neural network architecture for a given problem. The process of trial-and-error is not only time-consuming but may not generate an optimal network. The use of evolutionary computation is a step towards automation in neural network architecture generation.

An overview of the field of evolutionary computation is presented, together with the biological background from which the field was inspired. The most commonly used approaches to a mathematical foundation of the field of genetic algorithms are given, as well as an overview of the hybridization between evolutionary computation and neural networks. Experiments on the implementation of automatic neural network generation using genetic programming and one using genetic algorithms are described, and the efficacy of genetic algorithms as a learning algorithm for a feed-forward neural network is also investigated.

Vonk is with Vrije University, Amsterdam; Jain is with the University of South Australia; and Johnson is with Australian Defense Science and Technical Organization.

Intelligent Robots - Sensing, Modeling and Planning, edited by R.C. Bolles, H. Bunke and H. Noltemeier, World Scientific Publishing, 500 pages, $86, ISBN 981-02-3185-7

Rapid advances in sensors, computers and algorithms continue to fuel dramatic improvements in intelligent robots. In addition, robot vehicles are starting to appear in a number of applications. For example, they have been installed in public settings to perform such tasks as delivering items in hospitals and cleaning floors in supermarkets. And more spectacularly, the entire world was captivated when the Pathfinder mission to Mars deployed the Sojourner robotic vehicle to explore the surface of the Red Planet.

This book presents the latest advances in the principal fields that contribute to robotics. It contains contributions by leading experts addressing topics such as path and motion planning; navigation and sensing; vision and object recognition; environment modeling; and others.

Bolles is with SRI International, Bunke is with the University of Bern and Noltemeier is with the University of Wurzburg, Germany.

Fuzzy Logic-Based Programming, by Chin-Liang Chang, World Scientific Publishing, 250 pages, $45, ISBN 981-02-3070-2

The number of fuzzy logic applications is increasing rapidly. This book tells the reader how to use fuzzy logic to find solutions in areas such as control systems, factory automation, product quality control, product inspection, instrumentation, pattern recognition, image analysis, database query processing, decision support, data mining, time series (waveform) databases, geographic information systems, and image databases.

Chang was the first student to write a PhD fuzzy logic thesis under Lofti Zadeh, the "father" of fuzzy logic. In 1993 Chang designed and introduced the NICEL language for writing fuzzy programs that enclose if-then rules. This book includes many algorithms for real-world applications that can be represented in NICEL.
