Off-the-Shelf Intelligent Applications
By David Blanchard
Editor
A recent trend throughout the marketplace has been the emergence of
intelligent applications: prepackaged, knowledge-based system
solutions for a specific domain (see article beginning on p. 6 for a
lengthier discussion of knowledge-based systems). Following are
examples of some of the commercial applications aimed specifically at
manufacturers.
BuySmart
BuySmart is a personal computer (PC)-based expert system for the
evaluation and selection of applications software for manufacturers
and distributors. As the user describes their business, BuySmart
identifies the user's detailed functional requirements and provides a
list of the functional requirements available. It also guides the
user through the Request for Proposal process.

DANA
The Design Advisor Neural Analyzer (DANA) is designed to solve the
everyday problems in running a continuous chemical processing plant.
It consists of three main modules: The Experimental Design module
walks the user through the procedure to collect data required for an
effective model; the Model Development module builds a nonlinear
model and provides statistics on performance and confidence; and the
Analysis module proves a variety of methods for analyzing the
model.

ICAD
ICAD software allows companies to shorten product development cycles
for critical components and large assemblies by modeling their
engineering and manufacturing processes. The ICAD system interfaces
with computer-aided design (CAD) systems as well as engineering
analysis software. Companies can use ICAD for such tasks as
generating proposals, designing tooling such as stamping dies or mold
bases, and designing critical product components.

I-CAT
I-CAT is an expert system for fault diagnosis, troubleshooting and
repair of electrical, mechanical and electromechanical systems. It
analyzes the best placement of test points/sensors, and it develops
optimal diagnostic test strategies for new designs. I-CAT helps
manufacturers reduce labor costs in troubleshooting, increase up-time
of failed systems, and reduce spare parts inventory.

Production Scheduling Advisor
The Production Scheduling Advisor combines a spreadsheet with an
interactive Gantt chart, an optimization program, and a knowledge
base. It assists schedulers in planning day-to-day production runs
with a planning horizon of up to 12 months. An expert system
component diagnoses constraint violations, suggests adding shifts and
advises the user on how to proceed when a constraint must be
violated.
