Automakers Form Knowledge Consortium
An international consortium of automobile manufacturers -- including
General Motors, Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors, Volvo, BMW, Ricardo,
Eberspacher and Unipart -- are collaborating on a global project
called KADOS (Knowledge-based Automated Design of Intake and Exhaust
Systems) using the ICAD System from Concentra Corp. (Burlington,
Mass.). This application of ICAD, an intelligent engineering
automation tool, will enable the consortium members to design inlet
and exhaust systems for performance enhancement and noise
refinement.
KADOS software is used with WAVE, an industry-standard flow analysis
package development by Ricardo's automotive consulting engineers.
KADOS uses its shared knowledge base to set up and run WAVE in
seconds instead of hours. Now complex exhaust mufflers of inlet
manifolds can be designed in hours instead of days.
KADOS is designed to help auto manufacturers conform to stricter
drive-by noise emission standards being enacted worldwide. Other
companies are reportedly interested in joining the consortium,
including U.S. and European car makers, as well as auto components
companies.
