Closing an SAP R/3 Logistics Functionality Gap

In a recent client engagement we assisted a major chemical company to develop requirements for an integrated transportation management system (TMS). The assignment was complicated by the client's recent implementation of SAP R/3, a broad-scope enterprise solution with strengths in financial and manufacturing and major weaknesses in logistics.

Our review of major TMS vendors (DSI, SABRE, ALLTRANS, SID, CAPS Logistics) revealed little to no compatibility with SAP, but rapidly developing functionality in container management, freight management, shipment management and decision support. The TMS vendors are more motivated and capable of completing functionality in all major TMS processes and building bridges to SAP, than SAP is motivated to develop adequate TMS capability. With so many of our clients pursuing SAP projects, we will keep you posted on the latest developments in closing the SAP logistics gap.
