QAD (Carpinteria, Calif.; www.qad.com), a supplier of integrated business and distribution management software and services, recently revealed its Java/Internet strategy to users of its integrated manufacturing software MFG/PRO. At the QAD Bay Area User Group meeting held earlier this month, QAD, along with its alliance and development partners, Sun Microsystems (www.sun.com) and Integrated System Services (ISS) (www.intsysserv.com), presented their joint directions in Java and Internet-enabling MFG/PRO.

"QAD is developing a complete Java user interface for its customers' entire ERP application, one that will support virtually any desktop," said Kevin Cummins, Business Applications Group Manager at Sun Microsystems. QAD customers will thus be able to work in the thin client heterogeneous environment championed by Sun.

Cummins provided an industry overview of Java in manufacturing at the meeting. He explained how companies could leverage Java applications to improve their productivity, increase customer service, and cut costs by eliminating activities like confirming orders via fax or placing an order over the phone.

Along with lower costs, replacing the traditional function with electronic Internet-based processes can help increases customer service and decreases lead time, according to Paul Garibaldi, Western Regional Sales Manager at Integrated Systems and Services. By providing business-to-business transactions on-line, in real time, with a secure 7 by 24 availability, manufacturers can connect their supply chains with those of their customers seamlessly — from point of sale through credit and collection.

ISS's technology is an important component in QAD's delivery of Internet-enabled MFG/PRO. "ISS's business partner transaction functionality allows QAD customers to participate in Internet transactions right now," said Garibaldi. "Customers and vendors can have a access to information and transactions for their trading partners."
